Burnside Gorge Community Centre is built into the hillside at Cecelia Creek Park replicating a coastal bluff and blending the architecture seamlessly into the surrounding hillside. The accessible green roof becomes the new park on top of the building. Climbers on cables provide wildlife connections to the upper roof. The extensive living roof is a partial restoration of a Garry Oak ecosystem, including drifts of meadow wildflowers, grasses, and rock. Park walkways and viewpoints across the valley showcase the beautiful setting of the community centre.
A LEED® Gold certified project, Burnside Gorge, was the recipient of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities 2009 Award of Excellence for Extensive Institutional Design.
