The Hamilton and Sea Island Fire Halls integrate a variety of sustainable initiatives that reduce the ecological footprint on the environment. The living roof insulates the building, moderates rainwater runoff, and provides habitat for ground-nesting birds. A cistern and bio-swale catch and filter runoff before transferring it to the surrounding landscape. The design has made it possible to restore an existing wetland and virtually eliminate the use of piped drainage.
